Position Description
The Editor/Senior Editor is responsible for developing high-quality learning materials on schedule and within budget. The position will focus editorial effort on curriculum manuscripts ensuring the successful, profitable publication of assigned learning materials by working closely with writers, authors, outside resources, production, and marketing.
Essential Duties
1. The primary purposes of the position is to manage projects from concept through publication, ensuring created material is appropriate and suitable for the targeted age and subject matter, and that content is both factually and pedagogically correct.
2. He/she prepares documents according to style guide specifications, departmental guidelines, technical requirements and, when needed, to client-specifications. She/he reviews documents for high-quality content, logical, well-organized structure; edits manuscripts and page proofs, writing or rewriting material as needed for narrative, style, fit and clarity.
3. The Editor/Senior Editor assesses manuscript strengths and weaknesses regarding content , organization, approach, clarity/readability, pedagogy, production specifications, illustrations and photos. He/she proposes and implements solutions for problems in the manuscript; suggests and completes rewrites of portions of the manuscript as necessary and proposes ideas for improving the design of the program.
4. Working independently and/or as part of a larger team, the position may design, write and edit the content for Paxen Learning products while regularly collaborating with other members of the publishing department to ensure materials of the highest possible quality. .
5. The incumbent manages work effectively within defined schedules. He/she reprioritizes as necessary, amid competing schedules and encroaching deadlines to meet or exceed benchmark delivery dates. The position reports on project budget(s) as related to actual; monitors contracts, purchase orders and invoices for writers, authors, and vendors as assigned.
6. Utilizes critical thinking skills, particularly in the development and implementation of sound solutions to program and publishing issues.
7. Attends in-house editorial strategy meetings to troubleshoot problems, analyze market feedback, and brainstorm ideas for developing a superior product.
Environment and Physical Activity
The environment for this position is an open office that is clean and comfortable. The incumbent is in a non-confined office-type setting in which he/she is free to move about at will.
In the course of performing this position the incumbent spends time writing, typing, speaking, listening, lifting (up to 20 pounds), carrying, seeing (such as close, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and adjusted focus), sitting, pulling, walking, standing, squatting, kneeling and reaching.
This position may be required to operate any or all of the following: telephone, cellular telephone, and general office equipment including copy and fax machines, calculator, personal computer and related printers. He/she must be able to sit for prolonged periods and work non-traditional hours when needed.
Mental Demands
The Editor/Senior Editor must be able to: read and interpret documents or instruments, perform highly detailed work, assist or guide problem solving, resolve employee issues, perform mathematical functions, conduct meetings and presentations, prepare written communication, perform analytical reasoning, withstand stress, handle multiple, concurrent tasks and constant interruptions.

• Bachelor's degree in Education, English, Journalism or other core subject-matter area; and two-to-three (2-to-3) years of experience in educational publishing; or equivalent experience and/or training; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Understanding in a comprehensive manner the educational publishing industry and the bookmaking process, as relates to components (pupil and teacher editions and ancillaries), process (outlining, thumbnailing, editing, fact checking, production editing), and content. A general knowledge of online/Internet publishing is preferred.
• Exceptional oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions and instruct others, interpret documents, understand procedures, write reports and correspondence, speak clearly.
• Strong process orientation: Detail-oriented, logical, and methodological approach to problem solving. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures, such as project and style guidelines. Ability to deal with complex problems involving multiple facets and variables in non-standardized situations.
• Excellent organization and time management skills.
• Intermediate to advanced skills in MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and HTML/XML, as relates to the publishing process.
