Job Description:

Site Manager, Recruitment and Selection, Memphis Teacher Talent Initiative
Memphis, TN

The New Teacher Project (TNTP) strives to end the injustice of educational inequality by providing excellent teachers to the students who need them most and by advancing policies and practices that ensure effective teaching in every classroom. A national nonprofit organization founded by teachers, TNTP is driven by the knowledge that effective teachers have a greater impact on student achievement than any other school factor. In response, TNTP develops customized programs and policy interventions that enable education leaders to find, develop and keep great teachers. Since its inception in 1997, TNTP has recruited or trained approximately 43,000 teachers and worked with more than 200 districts in 31 states - benefiting an estimated 7 million students. Meanwhile, TNTP's acclaimed studies of the policies and practices that affect the quality of the teacher workforce -- most recently including The Widget Effect (2009) and Teacher Evaluation 2.0 (2010) -- have influenced federal education policy and inspired reform efforts across the country.

TNTP is active in more than 25 cities, including 10 of the nation's 15 largest.

We are currently seeking a Training and Instruction Manager for our Memphis Teaching Fellows/Tennessee Practitioner Teacher Program.  Training and Instruction Manager will be a TNTP employee based in the Memphis Public Schools office. This position is available immediately. TNTP will help defer the cost of relocation for out of city/state candidates.

Note for candidates currently teaching: it is possible this role could start part time and transition to a full time role in Spring 2012.

Performance Management Group

As long as education policies continue to ignore the differences between teachers, districts will never be able to build a thriving teacher workforce capable of closing the achievement gap. TNTP’s Performance Management group will work on the ground with states and districts to generate accurate performance data, use this data to inform school-level decisions, and drive district policy and practice. Within TNTP’s Performance Management group, the Human Capital Systems department will collaborate with districts and states to ensure that their policies, practices and systems are aligned to teacher effectiveness goals, for example by supporting teacher and principal evaluation design and adoption, training of principal managers, certification of evaluators, tenure/retention policy, and legislative/regulatory reform.

The Program
TNTP implements a start-to-finish teacher pipeline solution that is year-round and tied to results. Specifically, the Memphis Teacher Talent Initiative (MTTI) currently partners with Memphis City Schools (MCS) to supply high-quality teachers, support effective matches between candidates and schools, strengthen hiring practices and ensure that all of the district’s principals can choose the best teachers for their classrooms from the strongest possible pool of candidates. The Teacher Talent Initiative services include working directly with school leaders to strengthen their staffing approaches, market their schools to high-quality teacher candidates and identify teacher vacancies earlier in the school year. Through aggressive recruitment and selection, the Teacher Talent Initiative amasses a large, high-quality pool of teacher applicants – both traditionally certified and alternate route candidates - from which principals can hire the best who most closely fit school needs.
