Job Description:
Site Director - Georgia Teaching Fellows
Atlanta, Georgia
The New Teacher Project (TNTP) strives to end the injustice of educational inequality by providing excellent teachers to the students who need them most and by advancing policies and practices that ensure effective teaching in every classroom. A national nonprofit organization founded by teachers, TNTP is driven by the knowledge that effective teachers have a greater impact on student achievement than any other school factor. In response, TNTP develops customized programs and policy interventions that enable education leaders to find, develop and keep great teachers. Since its inception in 1997, TNTP has recruited or trained approximately 43,000 teachers and worked with more than 200 districts in 31 states - benefiting an estimated 7 million students. Meanwhile, TNTP's acclaimed studies of the policies and practices that affect the quality of the teacher workforce -- most recently including The Widget Effect (2009) and Teacher Evaluation 2.0 (2010) -- have influenced federal education policy and inspired reform efforts across the country.
TNTP is active in more than 25 cities, including 10 of the nation's 15 largest.
We are currently seeking a Site Director for our Georgia Teaching Fellows Program in Atlanta, Georgia. This position will be based in the program office in Atlanta, GA. Note that TNTP may provide a relocation stipend to help defer the cost of moving. This position is available immediately.
New Teacher Effectiveness
TNTP’s New Teacher Effectiveness Group is responsible for recruiting great teachers to teach in high-need schools and subject areas, and for preparing those teachers to be immediately effective in the classroom. TNTP’s Teaching Fellows programs streamline the path to teaching for accomplished career changers and recent graduates. In 2011, TNTP will recruit, select and provide training to outstanding teachers in more than 20 cities and 18 states. In 9 of those states and the District of Columbia, TNTP is also approved to recommend teachers for certification through our rigorous, relevant preparation model, which has been shown to produce highly effective teachers. Building on this strong track record, TNTP is pioneering an evaluation program to recommend certification only for teachers who demonstrate their ability to advance student learning.
The Program
In Georgia, The New Teacher Project has launched the Georgia Teaching Fellows (GTF) program to attract, train, develop and certify high quality individuals for partner school districts in/around Augusta and Columbus. This fall, we launch an additional cohort in/around Atlanta. Georgia Teaching Fellows recruits outstanding recent college graduates and mid-career changers to commit to teaching in the state’s most high-need public schools. After a rigorous pre-service training institute, Fellows will be prepared to assume full-time teaching positions in the fall of 2012.
Individuals selected into GTF participate in our comprehensive teacher certification program. All Fellows participate in a rigorous summer training institute with a classroom based component, in which they learn how to be effective teachers in high-need schools through a focus on instructional design and delivery and classroom management and culture. During the school year, GTF coordinates a 16-session seminar series, Teaching for Results, and other program administration activities as Fellows work toward their certification. Teaching for Results is designed to ensure participants are prepared to close the achievement gap by emphasizing proven approaches to improving student outcomes.
Fellows will earn certification by completing TNTP’s Teaching for Results seminar series during their first year in the classroom and by completing our Assessment of Classroom Effectiveness (ACE) screen. Our program is distinguished from other alternative route programs by the quality of its pre-service training and year-long professional development program, as well as our focus on making certification decisions based on performance in the classroom and ability to impact student achievement.
